About Karen Sun
Working to make Toronto a more inclusive city, for the past four years Karen Sun has been the Executive Director of the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNCTO), an organization dedicated to human rights, promoting equity, and civic participation. Much of this work is done through finding common ground with other organizations, some of these coalitions include the Colour of Poverty Campaign, Good Jobs for All Coalition, and Toronto Open Budget Initiative. Karen has proven herself as a community leader, with a reputation for being a hard working, reliable and politically engaged community-builder with the savvy to get results.
Karen Sun has dedicated over ten years of experience working and volunteering on environmental projects in the city. Karen was instrumental in the ecological restoration of High Park's Black Oak Savannah; the development of Toronto's Black Creek Urban Farm; and the organization of countless tree plantings and similar events around the city. With a Bachelor's in Environmental Sciences (B.Sc.(Env.)) and Master's in Environmental Planning (MSPl), Karen's intimate knowledge of urban ecology, parks and community development position her as a real asset to the Ward.
Karen currently serves on the boards of Heritage Toronto, the Working Women Community Centre, the Conservation Council of Ontario and the Chinese Interagency Network. She sits on advisory committees for the City of Toronto's Emergency Medical Services, Fire Services and Community Partnership Strategy. She also served on Toronto's Roundtable on the Environment.
In 2009, Karen was selected as an inaugural DiverseCity Fellow by the Toronto City Summit Alliance and Maytree Foundation for her leadership in strengthening the health and wealth of Toronto.
